Hello, everyone! My name is HyeRim Han and I'm a fourth-year student in Microbiology and Immunology. I've always loved research and this year, thanks to SRI, I was able to work in Professor Moshe Szyf's lab on wild-type and knockout Treg mice cells. This was a summer filled with identifying various regions of methylated sites of DNA, extracting DNA, converting DNA, amplifying relevant regions of DNA with PCR, and observing them through gel electrophoresis. It was PCR and lots and lots of agarose gel-making! Research always gives me so much joy and I would seriously encourage people to join research as it is an incredible opportunity to learn and do something that you might love! My supervisor, Elad, was amazing as he supported and guided me every step of the way. I would like to thank SRI for helping me find this position and spend my summer in such a productive and fun way :)

SRI Award Past Winners

When I first started coming to SRI’s events, I never thought I would get a research position in the Department of Experimental Surgery! The work in Dr. Henderson’s Lab required that I first attend animal handling workshops to learn how to work with mice, from basic handling and injections, to anesthesia and euthanasia. Once I had some basic skills, my assigned project pushed my manual dexterity to the limit. Under the tutelage of my supervisor and mentor Jose, I was trained in the femoral window defect: a microsurgery to create a 1x2mm oval window in the femurs of (anaesthetized) mice using a spherical 1mm dental drill. Building on the lab’s previous publication highlighting the importance of mast cells in bone healing, the team hypothesized that mast cells could be primed against an initial bone injury much like they could be primed against an antigen in the immune response. The SRI Summer Research Award created opportunities for me that I did not think were possible. I had the opportunity to learn from passionate scientists working at the cutting edge of their field. I made connections and gained experience like never before. Thank you SRI!

Winning the SRI award has led to me to fruitful and satisfying experience assisting Dr. Harnad in his research. I have learned how to apply the knowledge I've acquired throughout my classes, which is very gratifying, but perhaps, more importantly, I've also started to develop many hands-on skills that would have been harder to learn otherwise. From experimental design, data analysis, and programming to the physical handling of EEG equipment and the more  universal organizational abilities necessary to help run experiments with various participants under differing time constraints, this internship has provided me with an opportunity to both learn a varied set of skills and to understand my relative competence among them. After the SRI internship, I was offered a position at the lab for the upcoming school year. I now will be able to complete the honors program in Cognitive Science by using the lab as my research project, which I honestly would never have imagined happening a year ago.
